International acknowledgements for Emma Olmi, PhD student, and Alicja Barbara Kunkowska, research fellow, both from the Institute of Plant Sciences of the Sant'Anna School, who were awarded in Katowice, Poland, at the EU TalentOn 2024, the second edition of the European Union competition for early-career researchers.

The competition, aimed at young people aged between 21 and 35, challenges talented researchers from all scientific disciplines to find solutions to help solve the most pressing global problems, to bring innovative, cutting-edge ideas to one of the EU's five key missions, such as climate change adaptation, cancer prevention and treatment, ocean and water restoration, smart city development and the transition to healthier soils.

Talented young researchers from across Europe submitted their applications to join EU TalentOn and bring their contribution to change the world. 108 researchers, chosen from 1,276 from 38 countries, participated in the event, revealing innovative scientific solutions and competing in teams of four to tackle societal challenges related to the EU's Horizon Europe missions.

Emma Olmi and Alicja Barbara Kunkowska competed in two different categories. Emma Olmi's team received first prize in the category: ‘A soil deal for Europe’ with the ReviSoil project. Emma Olmi's team also received the award: ‘EU TalentOn Alumni Award’, which offers the opportunity to develop the project in a concrete way and present it again in Poland in December 2024. Alicja Barbara Kunkowska ‘s team won the second prize in the ’Adaptation to climate change‘ category with the ’ApiCure' project.
